I love using Bernat Softee Baby Cotton for baby blankets, and this Crochet Flamingo Stripes Baby Blanket is one of my favorites to make for new little ones. It is so soft, works up beautifully, and makes the most wonderful gift. The pretty pink and white stripes give it that sweet flamingo feel without being over the top.
This is a car seat size blanket, so it lays nicely over baby while in the car. It is small, quick to make, and perfect when you need a thoughtful handmade gift in a short amount of time.

Pattern Notes
This blanket works up in rows using a simple puffy stitch made up of single crochet and half double crochet stitches. The stitch is beginner-friendly and creates a lovely soft texture that is perfect for baby items.
Colors are changed every 8 rows to create the stripe effect. To make this blanket larger or smaller, use a starting chain that is a multiple of 3.
I finished the blanket with a frilly border of shells and picot stitches. It adds just the right amount of detail without being too fussy.

Pattern Instructions
Foundation Chain
Begin with Clear White.
Chain 123. To make this blanket any size, use a starting chain that is a multiple of 3.
Row 1
In the 2nd chain from the hook, work 1 SC and 1 HDC. Skip two chains. In the next chain work SC, HDC, HDC. Repeat from the beginning of that sequence across the row until there is one chain left. Work 1 SC into the final chain. CH 1 and turn.
Row 2
Work 1 SC and 1 HDC into the top of the SC of the previous row. Skip two stitches, then SC, HDC, HDC into the next stitch. Repeat across the row ending in the last stitch with 1 SC. CH 1 and turn.
Continuing the Blanket
Repeat Row 2 for the rest of the blanket, changing colors every 8 rows. Continue until your blanket reaches your desired length, or until you have used up your yarn evenly between both colors.
Border
The border is three rounds and adds a beautiful frilly finish to the Flamingo Stripes Baby Blanket.
Round 1: Pull up a loop in any corner. Chain 1, SC in the same space. Work 1 SC into each HDC stitch across the top and bottom, 1 SC at the end of each row on the sides. Work 3 SC into each corner. Join with a SL ST to the starting SC, CH 1, do not turn.
Round 2: SC in the same stitch as the join. Skip one stitch, 5 DC into the next stitch. Skip one stitch, SC into the next stitch. Repeat around. Slip Stitch to the starting SC. Do not turn at the end of the round.
Round 3: SL ST into the first DC, CH 2, SL ST into the next DC. Repeat across the tops of the DC. SL ST into the SC that separates the DC in the previous round.
Join at the end of the round, tie off, and weave in all your ends.
Tips
Changing colors: When you change colors every 8 rows, carry the unused yarn up the side of the blanket or cut and rejoin each time. Carrying is quicker, but cutting gives a neater edge.
Weaving in ends: With stripe patterns, you will have a number of ends to weave in. Take your time with this step. It makes the finished blanket look so much more polished.
Sizing: The starting chain of 123 is a multiple of 3. If you want a wider blanket, just add more chains in groups of 3. If you want it narrower, remove chains in groups of 3.
Yarn choice: Bernat Softee Baby Cotton is a really lovely yarn for baby items. It is soft against baby skin, holds its shape well after washing, and comes in beautiful colors that work perfectly together.
Gifting: This blanket makes such a sweet baby shower gift. The pink and white color combination is classic and works beautifully for any new baby.
